Artist’s Statement

“All nature manifests itself by means of color to the sense of sight.” – Goethe

My artwork is a melding of photography and painting. I photograph with infrared black and white film. After making a black and white silver gelatin print, I paint over it with translucent yet vibrant oil paints, infusing it with the transformative capacity of color. The colors I choose arise from my imagination, and reflect my personal creative interpretation of what I have photographed.

My subjects vary greatly, but always I aspire to distill what I observe into its essential compositional elements. From there it is my love of color and color relationships that is the creative impetus for my work.

It has always been the visual realm that moves me most. Making art is my way of closely observing and studying the visual world around me, then attempting to communicate my fascination with it.
